French Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in French. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

I: je
You: tu (friendly), vous (polite)
He: il
She: elle
We: nous
You (pl.): Vous
They: ils (masc.), elles (fem.)

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: Je t'aime
She is beautiful: Elle est belle
We are happy: Nous sommes heureux
They are dancing: Ils dansent

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

Me: moi
You: vous
Him: lui
Her: elle
Us: nous
You (pl.): Vous
Them: les

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: Donnez-moi votre numéro de portable
I can give you my email: Je peux vous donner mon email
Tell him to call me: Dîtes-lui qu'il m'appelle
Can you call us?: Pouvez-vous nous appeler?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

My: mon
Your: ton (sing.), votre (sing. polite), vos (plur.)
His: son
Her: sa
Our: notre
Your (pl.): votre (sing. object), vos (plur. object)
Their: leur

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

My phone number is . . .: Mon numéro de téléphone est...
His email is . . .: Son email est...
Our dream is to visit Spain: C'est notre rêve de visiter l'Espagne
Their country is beautiful: Son pays est beau

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: le mien
Yours: le vôtre
His: le sen
Hers: la sienne
Ours: le nôtre
Yours (pl.): les vôtres
Theirs: les leurs

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: Le livre est à moi
Is this pen yours?: Ce stylo est à toi?
The shoes are hers: Les chaussures sont à elle
Victory is ours: Le victoire est à nous
