Finnish Past

This is a list of verbs in the past tense in Finnish. First let's start with the raw format before conjugating the verbs to the past form. Make sure to compare this table and the one below it.

To love: Rakastaa
To give: Antaa
To play: Leikkiä, pelata
To read: Lukea
To understand: Ymmärtää
To have: Olla (omistaa)
To know: Tietää
To learn: Oppia
To think: Ajatella, miettiä
To work: Työskennellä
To speak: Puhua

To smile: Hymyillä

These samples show how the verbs above are conjugated in the past tense in a sentence which includes all the object pronouns (I, you, she...).

I saw you: Näin sinut
I wrote with a pen: Kirjoitin kynällä
You loved apples: Sinä rakastit omenoita
You gave money: Sinä annoit rahaa
You played tennis: Sinä pelasit tennistä
He read (past) a book: Hän luki kirjaa
He understood me: Hän ymmärsi minua
She had a cat: Hänellä oli kissa
She knew my friend: Hän tunsi ystäväni
We wanted to learn: Me halusimme oppia
We thought Spanish is easy: Me luulimme että espanja on helppoa
You (plural) worked here: Te työskentelitte täällä
You (plural) spoke French: Te puhuitte ranskaa
They drove a car: He ajoivat autoa
They smiled: He hymyilivät
